10

High Card

Five unrelated cards which do not form any of the hands below. The highest card is then declared, so, A-10-9-4-3 is called “ace high”. If two or more players have the same high card then the second card is compared to see which one is higher. If that’s the same, then the third and so on.

9

Pair

A pair is two cards with the same index, three other unrelated cards make up the rest of the hand. If two or more players have the same pair then the highest unrelated card wins. If that is the same it’s the next highest card. Then finally the winner will be the player with the highest low card.

Two Pair

Two pairs are when you have two different pair in the one hand. For example 2-2-10-10-A is a hand with two pairs, the two pairs are of different index otherwise you would have four of a kind, there is one card left over and this makes up the five. If two or more players have two pairs then it is the highest pair that wins. If this pair is the same then the highest second pair wins. And if that pair is the same then it is the highest fifth card that wins.

7

Three of a Kind

Three cards of the same index plus two other cards. This is also called “trips”. If two or more players have trips then the hand with the highest trips wins if the trips are the same then the highest card of the remaining two wins. If that is the same then the highest fifth card wins.

Straight

Five cards of mixed suits in sequence for example 4H-5C-6C-7D-8S. If two or more players have a straight then the player with the highest top card wins. An ace can count high or low in a straight, but you can’t go over the top. So 10-J-Q-K-A and A-2-3-4-5 are straights, but Q-K-A-2-3 is not.

5

Flush

Simply five cards of the same suit. If two or more players have a flush then the flush with the highest card wins. If they both have the same highest card then it comes down to the second highest, third highest, fourth highest and then the fifth highest. For example AD-10D-9D-4D-2D beats AC-10C-9C-3C-2C.

4 Top 3 5 Full House

This hand is three cards of one index and two cards of another index. For example 10-10-10-2-2 this would be known as 10s full of 2s. If two or more players have full houses then the highest three of a kind wins. If the trips are the same then the highest pair would win.

3

Four of a Kind

Four cards of the same index, such as four Jakes. The fifth card can be anything. This combination is also called "quads”. If two or more players fours of a kind, the one with the higher set of quads is higher so 7-7-7-7-A beats by 2-2-2-2-A. In Texas Holdem it can happen that two players have the same quads. If this happens then the player with the higher fifth card wins.

Straight Flush

This is exactly what it says, a straight and a flush together, that is five cards in sequence of the same suite. If two or more players have straight flushes, the one containing the higher top card wins. An ace can be counted as high or low, so AS-2S-3S-4S-5S is a straight flush, but its highest card is the five, not the ace, Which makes it the lowest straight flush. The cards cannot "go over the top" so KH-AH-2H-3H-4H is not valid.

1

Royal Flush

This is the highest straight flush and consists simply of an ace, king, queen, jack and ten, all in the same suit. As no two people in any one game of Texas Holdem can have this hand, it is not broken down into suit rankings.
