So, you’re sat at a table playing poker or you’re
in an online room. Before you place you first bet the two things you
must consider are, what’s my position and what’s my starting
hand. Only once both these factors have been given proper consideration,
can you play in the game. We will now look at both those things in some
detail.
|
|

Position, put simply, is where you are sat in relation to the dealer.
The dealer is the best position to be sat in because you get to see what
all of the other players are doing before you make your mind up. From
the dealer the play goes around the table clock wise. The person to the
left of the dealer is the small blind and the first to act after the flop.
The person to the left of the small blind is the big blind. As these to
persons have already placed a bet into the pot and the action is going
clockwise, the first person to act once the initial two cards have been
dealt is the person to the left of the big blind. Given that there are
ten players on the table the blinds and the person to their left are said
to be in early positions. The next four persons would be in middle positions
and the last three in late positions. Persons in the late positions can
play weaker hands that people in the other two positions. The persons
in early positions must only play the very best hands because they do
not have the privilege of seeing what the other players bet before they
do. For example if you are in an early position and you receive a low
pocket pair like sixes. You decided to say in the hand and bet. The next
player then raises and maybe one or two others call. You will be then
in the position of decided to equal there bet or fold. The problem is
that you have already placed a bet into the pot and are pot committed.
Each of the players in the hand will most likely have two cards that are
both higher than yours, an Ace or a higher poker pair. Your only chance
of winning will be to hit another six. Also thought the rest of this game
you will have to act before the other player, thus they will always have
a positional advantage. Being the last person to act, sitting with the
dealer button, is a huge advantage not only can you see what everybody
else does before you act you also have the opportunity to potentially
double the size of the pot. If you raise, assuming everybody else stays
in the pot size will double.

As your starting had consists of two cards and there are fifty two
cards in the deck there is a limited number of starting hands. In fact
there are one hundred and sixty nine possible starting hand. We are
now going to look at what hands are worth playing based on your starting
position. The below forty two hands are the only ones worth playing
if you are dealt any of the other one hundred and twenty seven hand,
unless you are the big blind and can check, then fold your cards. You
are only wasting money if you try and play on. The starting hands are
split into three groups biased on the starting positions, early, middle
or late. Each table below is divided into three sections, Pair, Suited
and Unsuited, please note that * denotes any other suited card.
